Description

A delightful layered dessert featuring vanilla sponge cake, cherry filling, and whipped cream.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 cups vanilla sponge cake, cut into cubes
  • 2 cups pitted cherries (fresh or canned)
  • 1/2 cup cherry juice or syrup
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • chocolate shavings, for garnish
  • additional cherries, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Cherry Filling:

    • In a small saucepan, combine the cherries, cherry juice, and sugar.
    • Heat over medium heat until it starts to simmer.
    • In a small bowl, mix the cornstarch with a bit of water to form a slurry.
    • Slowly add the slurry to the cherry mixture, stirring continuously until thickened.
    • Remove from heat and let it cool.
  2. Prepare the Whipped Cream:

    • In a large mixing bowl, combine heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract.
    • Whip until soft peaks form using an electric mixer. Be careful not to overbeat.
  3. Assemble the Trifle:

    • In a trifle bowl, start with a layer of vanilla sponge cake cubes.
    • Spoon a layer of cherry filling over the cake.
    • Add a layer of whipped cream over the cherry filling.
    • Repeat the layers until the bowl is full, finishing with a layer of whipped cream.
  4. Garnish:

    • Top with chocolate shavings and additional cherries for decoration.

Notes

  • Ensure the cherry filling is completely cooled before layering to prevent melting the whipped cream.
  • For an extra chocolatey flavor, you can drizzle melted chocolate between layers.
  • Chill the trifle for at least an hour before serving for the best flavor integration.
  • You can prepare the layers in advance and assemble it just before serving to keep it fresh.
