Key Ingredients for Shrimp Deviled Eggs

To create the ultimate shrimp deviled eggs, you’ll need a handful of essential ingredients that come together to make this seemingly simple dish an extraordinary appetizer. Let’s dive into what you’ll need!

  • Eggs: The foundation of any deviled egg recipe! For a creamy filling, I recommend using large eggs, hard-boiled to perfection. Cooking them gently helps keep the yolks bright yellow without that pesky green ring.

  • Shrimp: Fresh shrimp steals the show here. A quick poach or sauté gives you tender, succulent pieces. Opt for shrimp that’s wild-caught if you can, as it usually has a superior flavor.

  • Mayonnaise: The secret to creaminess! A high-quality mayonnaise binds everything together, lending rich flavor and smooth texture to the filling.

  • Mustard: Just a touch of Dijon or yellow mustard adds a delightful zing, perfectly complementing the shrimp’s sweetness.

  • Spices and Seasonings: Salt, pepper, and a sprinkle of paprika enhance the overall flavor. You can even experiment with a dash of hot sauce for a spicy kick!

Each of these components plays a vital role, transforming simple eggs into a standout dish perfect for any gathering!

Cooking Tips and Notes for Shrimp Deviled Eggs

Creating shrimp deviled eggs is not just about following a recipe; it’s about crafting a delightful experience, one bite at a time. Whether you’re hosting a brunch or simply treating yourself, these tips can elevate your dish from good to unforgettable.

Choose the Right Shrimp

Opt for fresh, high-quality shrimp. If you’re able, visit your local seafood market and ask for shrimp that’s sustainably sourced. Generally, medium to large shrimp work best for that perfect balance of flavor and texture.

Perfectly Cooked Eggs

Getting your eggs just right is crucial. Boil your eggs for about 9-11 minutes; this ensures a hard yolk without that grey ring around it. Once they’re done, plunge them into an ice bath to stop the cooking process. This makes peeling easier, too!

Add Flavor Wisely

To ensure that your shrimp deviled eggs are bursting with flavor, consider adding a bit of Old Bay seasoning or paprika to your shrimp mixture. Don’t forget a splash of lemon juice for brightness; it brings everything together beautifully.

Presentation Matters

Deviled eggs can be a visual treat! Use a piping bag to display your filling elegantly. Garnish with fresh herbs or a sprinkle of paprika for a dash of color. Remember, we eat with our eyes first!

Experiment and Enjoy

Feel free to get creative! Try adding avocado for creaminess or jalapeño for a spicy kick. The beauty of shrimp deviled eggs is that they’re versatile; make them your own!

By keeping these tips in mind, you’ll create a dish that not only tastes fantastic but also impresses your guests. Happy cooking!

  • Author: TastyRecipes
  • Total Time: 27 minutes
  • Yield: 12 egg halves 1x
  • Diet: Gluten-Free

Description

A delicious twist on traditional deviled eggs, featuring shrimp and a hint of wasabi.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 eggs (use eggs at least a week old if possible)
  • 2 tsp. wasabi paste, use more or less to taste (I used 2 tsp. wasabi powder mixed with 4 tsp. water)
  • 1/2 cup small frozen shrimp, thawed
  • 4 green onions, green end thinly sliced (save white ends for another use)
  • 3 T mayo
  • pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Remove eggs from refrigerator and put in warm water so eggs come to room temperature, then boil the eggs, following instructions for Perfect Hard-Boiled Eggs.
  2. Cool eggs in cold water with ice cubes, then peel and cut in half.
  3. Remove egg yolks and put in bowl.
  4. While eggs boil, first thinly slice green onions, then finely mince about 2 T of them, leaving the rest for garnishing the finished eggs.
  5. Check to see if shrimp is thawed (you can microwave on low for a few seconds if needed).
  6. Finely chop shrimp.
  7. Put 3 T mayo into a small bowl, then mix in wasabi paste, a small amount at a time, tasting after each addition, until it is as spicy as you’d like it (You can substitute Dijon for the wasabi if you prefer).
  8. In a larger bowl, mash egg yolks with a fork.
  9. Then mix 2 T finely minced green onions, chopped shrimp, mayo-wasabi mixture, and Vege-Sal or salt into mashed egg yolks.
  10. Discard 2 egg white halves (I nearly always have at least one egg that gets mangled) then arrange the other egg white halves on a cutting board so they’re ready to be filled.
  11. Use a rubber scraper to transfer the egg yolk mixture to a small plastic bag or piping bag. Cut off the tip of one corner if using plastic bag, then squeeze the egg yolk mixture into the egg white halves, until all the mixture is used.
  12. Garnish each egg with some of the thinly sliced green onions, and serve Shrimp Deviled Eggs right away.

Notes

  • You can add more or less wasabi depending on your spice preference.
  • For a creamier texture, you can add more mayo.
  • These can be made a few hours in advance, just keep them refrigerated until serving.
